Simple to use, easy to carry.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaking water fit to drink takes two stages: filtration, then purification.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t The Brown Bag filter handles the first stage, filtration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt removes turbidity, or cloudiness, from the water effectively.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t Turbid water is cloudy water with sediment in suspension, such as sand, mud, silt or any organic matter...\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t To make water drinkable it is essential to remove that sediment, which encourages pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and parasites to multiply.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t Cloudy or turbid water is harder to purify with a chemical treatment (tablets) and pathogens are removed less effectively.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce the water has been filtered with the Brown Bag you absolutely must purify it. Even if the water looks clear and clean it can hold pathogens that have to be removed by purification.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t That is the second stage. You must either boil the water, treat it chemically, or put it through a mechanical filter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Brown Filter Bag is very effective for pre-filtering water before it passes through a conventional filter such as a Katadyn or MSR.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t That pre-filtering considerably reduces clogging of your filter and so extends its life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eImportant: before you first use it, it is essential to \"break in\" the Brown Bag.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t When the bag is new the cotton is stiff. It has to be softened, the fibres broken and the weave loosened. The water will then pass through the fabric more easily and the filter will work better.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t - You need to saturate the fabric with water. To do that, soak the bag in water then squeeze it every which way, crumple it, wring it out... repeat until the fabric is soaked through. Do not be afraid to treat it roughly, the Brown Bag is very strong.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t - Repeat the process three or four times, letting the bag dry between each round.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t - You can also put the bag through the washing machine: cold cycle, no detergent or softener. Remember to take the paracord off before putting it in the machine.\n\t\t\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eInstructions for use:\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e 1. Wet the Brown Bag in the water and work it until the fabric is saturated.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t 2. Fill the bag to the brim. If needed, use a cup to top it right up.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t 3. Hang it from a branch, a tripod...\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t 4. Let the water run through without collecting it until the level in the bag reaches the seam about 10 cm from the top. That is roughly 1\/4 of the bag's capacity. Letting this water through cleans the outside of the bag and stops dirt falling into your pot.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t 5. Place your pot under the Brown Bag. Let it filter; the time varies with the turbidity of the water. The cloudier it is, the longer it takes.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t 6. Once filtered, the water is still not fit to drink. You absolutely must purify it, either by boiling it, by chemical treatment (Micropur tablets for instance), or by passing it through a Katadyn or MSR type filter.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t\n\t\t\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAfter each use it is important to clean the bag thoroughly. Turn it inside out like a sock and rinse it in clean water to remove all the sediment. Use a small brush if needed.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t\t The Brown Bag must be perfectly clean and dry before you store it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe cotton cloth used for the Brown Bag is made by a company in the United Kingdom specialising in technical fabrics for sports and military clothing.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t\t It is the same company that made the cloth for the military \"Millbank Bag\" filters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAvailable in two sizes:\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t\t - Brown Filter Bag Regular: holds up to 3 L, perfect for one to three people. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to filter the first litre. Reckon on under an hour to filter all three litres. You can, however, top it up once the first litre has filtered, to get another litre of filtered water quickly.\u003cbr\u003e\n\t\t\t - Brown Filter Bag Large: holds up to 20 L, perfect for groups. Reckon on several hours to filter the 20 L. Tip: filter overnight, then you can disinfect the water the following morning.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Brown Bag Regular is our favourite: compact, light and very tough (all but indestructible). Its filtration capacity is unlimited.
