Buying guide: choosing the right piece
The flannel shirt: the versatile classic
The flannel shirt remains a bushcraft essential. Its heavy brushed cotton is soft and warm. Breathable enough for moderate effort, it insulates effectively at rest. Worn open over a t-shirt in mild weather or buttoned under a jacket when it is cold, it adapts to every situation.
Heavy flannels offer better insulation and can serve as a light jacket on cool evenings at camp. Their dense fabric resists snags well.
The wool sweater: warmth and durability
The traditional wool sweater goes through the decades without dating. Wool insulates even when wet, does not hold odours and is naturally fire resistant, a valuable quality around the hearth. Heavy knits give unmatched warmth for cold days and winter bivouacs.
Favour dense wools and tight knits, which snag less on branches and last longer. A good wool sweater passes down through the generations.
Fleece: light and high performing
Fleece excels when weight and quick drying matter. Lighter than wool for the same warmth, it moves moisture away effectively during sustained effort. It comes in several weights: thin fleeces for intense activity, heavy fleeces for static cold.
Zipped models let you vent quickly if you overheat. Fleece gilets free your arms for hand work while keeping your core warm.

Frequently asked questions
Flannel or wool: which should you choose?
Flannel suits moderate temperatures and regular activity: it breathes well and dries faster than wool. Wool excels in hard cold and at rest: it insulates more and stays warm even when damp. Ideally, own both.
How do you look after a flannel shirt?
Machine wash at 30-40°C. Flannel copes well with regular washing and softens over time. Avoid a hot tumble dryer, which can shrink the cotton. Dry in the open air or on a low setting.
Is fleece suitable for bushcraft?
Yes, as a mid layer. Be careful near the fire though: synthetic fibres melt on contact with embers. Keep a safe distance, or favour wool and cotton for time around the hearth.
Which fleece weight should you choose?
Common weights run from 100 to 400 g/m2. A light fleece (100-200 g) suits sustained effort or a thin layer. A heavy fleece (300-400 g) insulates effectively at rest or in hard cold.
