Buying guide: choosing the right firesteel
Understanding the different sizes
Rod size determines two key things: ease of use and lifespan. Compact models have a thin rod, perfect as a backup or for ultralight trips. Standard versions have a thicker rod, easier to strike and throwing more sparks with each pass.
For regular bushcraft use, the large models are the best choice. Their generous rod allows a full stroke and throws impressive showers of sparks, while lasting for well over 20,000 lights.
Rod alone or complete set?
Firesteels sold on their own suit you if you already have a good striker or a fixed blade knife with a 90° spine. Complete sets include a dedicated striker and sometimes a storage pouch, which makes them ideal to start with or as a gift for someone who loves the outdoors.
The question of the handle
The handle directly affects grip, especially with gloves or wet hands. Handles in natural materials feel good and grip well. Rubberised handles guarantee a firm hold in any circumstances. Choose according to your preferences and the conditions you usually meet.

How many lights does a firesteel give?
Depending on rod size, a firesteel gives between 3,000 and 20,000 lights. Compact models sit at the lower end, large formats at the top. Either way it is a long-term investment that far outlasts lighters and matches in both reliability and lifespan.
Does a firesteel work when wet?
Yes, and that is its main advantage over other fire-lighting methods. Ferrocerium throws sparks even when soaked. Simply wipe the rod and strike as usual. The real difficulty lies in preparing dry tinder.
How do you prepare a new firesteel?
New firesteels often have a thin protective layer of black oxidation. Scrape it off over a few centimetres before first use to expose the bright ferrocerium. After that your firesteel is ready to throw sparks properly.
Which striker should you use?
The striker supplied with the sets works perfectly. Otherwise, the spine of a fixed blade knife ground to 90° makes an excellent striker. Avoid blades that are too thin or rounded, as they slide over the ferrocerium without throwing sparks.
