Choosing the right backpack
Which capacity for which use?
- For a day out, a 15 to 25 litre pack is enough for water, food, a waterproof and small kit. It is the ideal size for walks and light bushcraft sessions.
- For a weekend outdoors, go for 30 to 45 litres. That volume takes a sleeping bag, spare clothing, fire kit, outdoor cookware and two days of food.
- For long expeditions with a full bivouac, aim for 60 litres and up. Some modular models reach 100 litres thanks to extension pockets and straps, letting you carry shelter, sleeping gear and complete self-sufficiency.
Waxed canvas or technical materials?
Waxed canvas remains the traditional choice in bushcraft. Waterproof, quiet and extremely durable, it takes on a patina over time and is easy to repair. With leather reinforcements, it will give you decades of use. It needs regular care (re-waxing) but ages beautifully.
Technical materials such as Cordura or military fabrics offer an excellent weight-to-strength ratio. Lighter than waxed canvas, they suit intensive use and long distances. Some models include MOLLE systems for attaching extra kit.
The carry system
A good carry system spreads the weight between shoulders, back and hips. Padded shoulder straps and a hip belt are essential for heavy loads and long distances. Check what adjustments are available so you can fit the pack to your build.
Internal frame packs hold their shape better and transfer weight efficiently to the hips. Frameless packs are lighter and more compact, suited to moderate loads.

Frequently asked questions
Which capacity to start out in bushcraft?
A 30 to 45 litre pack is an excellent compromise to begin with. It carries everything you need for a weekend without being oversized for days out. You can always add a daypack later.
How do you look after a waxed canvas pack?
Brush the canvas regularly to remove dust and dirt. Apply a dedicated wax once or twice a year, more often on areas that rub. For leather parts, use a nourishing cream. Avoid machine washing, which ruins the waterproofing.
Backpack with or without a frame?
Internal frame packs carry heavy loads better and spare your back over long distances. Frameless packs are lighter and more compact, suited to moderate loads and to experienced users who know how to pack well.
Can I attach kit to the outside of the pack?
Most packs have compression straps and attachment points for tools, a sleeping mat or clothing. Military models often include a MOLLE system compatible with many accessories. Do balance the load to keep walking comfortable.
