Buying guide: choosing the right jacket
Anorak or zipped jacket?
- The anorak goes on over your head through a partial opening. That design keeps seams and entry points for wind and water to a minimum. The large kangaroo pouch keeps hands warm and gives you accessible storage. It is the traditional choice of bushcrafters and of northern peoples.
- The zipped jacket opens fully, which makes it easier to put on and lets you vent quickly during hard effort. More versatile day to day, it suits anyone who switches often between activity and rest.
Which insulation should you choose?
- Synthetic insulation such as G-Loft keeps its warmth even when wet and dries quickly. Light and packable, it suits damp conditions and activities where you sweat a lot. It is simple to look after.
- Fleece offers an excellent warmth-to-price ratio and dries very fast. Breathable and comfortable, it excels as a mid layer. It comes in various weights to suit conditions.

Wool, the traditional option, stays warm even when damp and does not hold odours. Quiet and naturally fire resistant, it suits bushcraft perfectly. The heavy wool bushshirt is a timeless classic.
Protection from the elements
For bushcraft, favour tough, quiet fabrics. Noisy waterproof membranes scare game off and get in the way of being immersed in nature. Waxed cotton, G-1000 and dense wools give enough protection from showers while staying discreet. For genuinely wet conditions, add a poncho or a rain cape.

Can a bushshirt replace a jacket?
In cool, dry weather, yes. A heavy wool bushshirt keeps light wind out and insulates effectively. In genuinely cold or wet weather, wear it as a mid layer under an anorak or a waterproof jacket.
How do you layer effectively?
Start with a breathable base layer, add a fleece or a sweater depending on the cold, then a windproof or waterproof jacket if needed. Adapt by removing or adding layers as effort and conditions change.
How do you look after an insulated jacket?
Machine wash at 30°C with a mild detergent. Synthetic insulation copes well with washing. Dry on a low setting or in the open air. Avoid fabric softener, which reduces breathability.
