Firesteel XL Hardy

Bushmen offers a very handsome ferro rod here, the Firesteel XL Hardy.

Far larger than average (10 cm long by 10 mm in diameter), the Firesteel XL Hardy throws many more sparks than standard-size ferro rods.
You have more surface to strike, so you throw more sparks, and that makes starting a fire easier even in hard conditions.

The rod has a hole through which runs a cord joining the striker to the Firesteel. Used as a wrist loop, that cord lets you hold the rod well towards its end and so strike over a longer distance.
More importantly, this 50 cm paracord-type cord is a small survival cord.
It contains a tinder strand. That is the brown one, the thickest strand.
You pull that strand out and cut a small piece off. With a knife you fray it to make it catch more easily. A few strikes of the ferro rod and you have a good flame to get a fire going.
The survival cord also contains a small length of wire, useful for a repair or for trapping.

The striker is made from 2 mm thick black steel with a curved profile that hugs the rod.
The serrated end makes it far easier to prepare sawdust and fine shavings to get a fire going more easily still.
