Buying guide: the three-layer system
Base layer: moving moisture away
The base layer, worn next to the skin, wicks sweat away to keep you dry. Merino wool excels in this role: naturally antibacterial, it regulates temperature and stays comfortable even when wet. Our technical Merino base layers come in different weights to suit every season.
Choose a light weight for intense activity or summer, a medium weight for versatility, and a heavy weight for static cold or nights at the bivouac.
Mid layer: keeping the cold out
The mid layer traps warm air close to the body. Wool sweaters, fleeces and insulated jackets fill this role. Synthetic insulation such as G-Loft stays warm even when damp and dries fast, ideal for changeable conditions.
Heavy flannel also makes an excellent mid layer: breathable, comfortable and tough enough to be worn on its own as an outer layer in mild weather.
Outer layer: protection from the elements
The outer layer protects from wind, rain and knocks. Anoraks, waxed jackets and traditional bushshirts keep the elements out while still breathing. For bushcraft, favour quiet, snag-resistant materials over noisy membranes. Waxed cotton and boiled wool garments give natural, long-lasting protection.

Why choose Merino wool?
Merino wool naturally regulates temperature, wicks moisture and stays comfortable even when wet. Naturally antibacterial, it does not hold odours even after several days. It is the ideal fibre for bushcraft and multi-day trips.
What is the difference between wool weights?
The weight tells you the thickness and the warmth. A light weight (150-200 g) suits hard effort or summer. A medium weight (200-300 g) is the versatile option. A heavy weight (400 g+) insulates well at rest or in hard cold.
How do you look after wool garments?
Wash cold or at 30°C maximum with a wool detergent. Avoid harsh spinning and the tumble dryer. Dry flat to keep the shape. Between washes, simply air the garment: wool cleans itself naturally.
