Tinder on a Rope

Use your knife to shave curls off it.
Cut very fine shavings and you can light them straight from your ferro rod.
You can also cut thicker shavings, which then keep alight a flame started on a very dry, volatile material such as grass. That holds the flame long enough to catch the twigs.

Then add the kindling you have prepared in advance and your fire is going.
